Understanding App Access Toggles

Each user can use Kiosk, Workstation, and the FabWise (iOS) app in the combination that fits their job. Kiosk and FabWise (iOS) are separate toggles; Workstation follows automatically once Kiosk is on.

Why it matters

Different people in your shop need different ways to use FabWise. A welder clocks in at the shared kiosk. An office admin sometimes covers the back parts counter and also clocks at the kiosk. A supervisor uses the iPhone app to check on the floor. A senior fabricator sets up their own tablet at their bench.

FabWise models this per user — not a "user type." You turn on what this person needs, and they get it. No work-arounds.

How it works

Every user's devices page has three sections:

App What it is
Kiosk access A toggle. Adds the user to the shared shop-floor kiosk roster. They tap their name and enter a PIN to clock in/out.
Workstation Not a separate toggle — any user with Kiosk access on a Professional-plan account can have a tablet set up for them. You bind the tablet to the worker by scanning a QR code; after that, no sign-in — the tablet itself is the worker's identity there.
FabWise (iOS) access Not a toggle either — it's automatic for anyone with admin console access (Supervisor, Manager, or Admin role). They sign in to the iPhone app with their email, the same passwordless way as the admin console.

You can mix and match:

  • Kiosk + Workstation: a shop worker who clocks in at the kiosk on busy days and uses their own bound tablet at their bench on others.
  • Kiosk only: a standard shop worker — most workers.
  • Kiosk, Admin role: the office admin who covers the parts counter and clocks at the kiosk when they do.
  • Supervisor/Manager/Admin role, no Kiosk: an office role that tracks work from the admin console or the iOS app but doesn't clock in.

Where to find it

  • Page: any user's devices page
  • Path: Admin > Users > (click a user) > Devices
  • Who can see it: Account admins

For an account-wide view of every connected device — all kiosks, workstations, and iOS sign-ins in one place, each with a Revoke — see Settings > Devices.

What you'll see

The devices page has one section per app — Kiosk, Workstation, and FabWise (iOS):

  • Kiosk — enable toggle plus the user's 4-digit PIN. PIN is required when kiosk access is on. Workers use this PIN to clock in at the kiosk.
  • Workstation — no toggle. Shown once Kiosk access is on; grayed out on the Starter plan. On Professional, click Set up tablet to generate a QR that binds a tablet to the worker.
  • FabWise (iOS) — informational only. Shown as available automatically for anyone with a Supervisor, Manager, or Admin role.

What to do

Setting up a typical shop worker

Most workers need just the kiosk:

  1. Open the user's Devices page.
  2. In the Kiosk section, turn Enabled on. Enter a 4-digit PIN.
  3. Save. The worker appears in the kiosk roster on the next refresh.

Setting up a worker with their own tablet

For a senior fabricator or anyone who tracks tasks on their own device:

  1. Open the user's Devices page.
  2. Turn on Kiosk and enter a PIN (Workstation requires Kiosk access).
  3. In the Workstation section, click Set up tablet. Scan the QR on the worker's tablet, or send them the enrollment link.
  4. They confirm on the tablet. From then on, that tablet is bound to them — no sign-in, just open the app.

Setting up a supervisor with the iPhone app

  1. Open the user's Devices page. Set Role: Supervisor on the user profile first.
  2. Save. FabWise (iOS) access follows the role automatically — no separate toggle. The supervisor downloads the FabWise app from the App Store and signs in with their email, the same passwordless way as the admin console (see Roles & Permissions for what the supervisor role can do).

Setting up an admin who also covers the kiosk

The "office admin who clocks at the parts counter" case:

  1. Set Role: Admin on the user profile.
  2. On the Devices page, turn Kiosk on and enter a PIN.
  3. Save.

The admin signs in to the admin console by email (magic link or passkey), and types their PIN at the kiosk like any worker.

Common questions

Can a user have Workstation access on Starter?

No. Workstation is shown but grayed out on Starter accounts. Upgrade to Professional to set up tablets for your workers.

What happens to Workstation users when I downgrade to Starter?

Their bound tablet stops working. Nothing is lost — when you re-upgrade, the tablet's existing binding starts working again with no re-setup needed. See Enrolling Workers for Workstation.

What if a worker doesn't have an email address?

That's fine for a standard shop-floor worker (User role) — leave the email field blank and give them a PIN for the kiosk. Supervisor, Manager, and Admin roles require an email, since those roles sign in to the admin console and the iOS app. See Creating a user without an email.
